As we do our part in helping the victims of negligence, the Texas Department of Transportation is educating people of the dangers of road distractions during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Saving Lives Through Education

An activity that could potentially take a driver’s attention away from the road is known as distracted driving. According to Octavio Saenz, a TxDOT spokesman for the Pharr district, drivers are strongly encouraged to turn off their phones or leave them out of reach while on the road. If a call must be answered, drivers are advised to pull over to a safe location. Saenz additionally encouraged family members not to call or text their loved ones or friends if they know they’re driving.

Simple things, such as getting after your kids in the backseat or even talking to a passenger can be considered dangerous and distracting. Some other distractions on the road include:

  • Texting
  • Emailing
  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Grooming
  • Reading
  • Adjusting the radio
  • Adjusting navigation devices
