Illegal Street Race Leads to Collision in McAllen

by Amber Cortez | February 10th, 2016 | Auto Accident, Blog, Legal Representation

The State of Texas creates, passes and enforces laws to keep drivers on our roads safe. Oftentimes, though, many people find themselves in situations where other drivers abuse this privilege and decide to act recklessly. When this happens, victims are typically burdened with serious injuries, mounting medical bills, months or years worth of therapy and in the most extreme cases, loss of life.

This was the unfortunate situation in McAllen in early January 2015 when a 20-year old man was tragically killed and another left in a coma following a collision between three vehicles, two of which were allegedly street racing.

The J. Gonzalez Injury Attorneys is fully aware of how serious accidents impact victims and their families. Know what we’re here to provide the legal help you might need.

A Reckless Act

The incident occurred on January 5, 2016 when two men, both allegedly illegally racing and heading southbound on North 10th St., collided with a Jeep traveling eastbound on Sprague. The Jeep’s driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and was last listed as being in a coma. The passenger of one of the racing vehicles was killed.

According to one of the racers, both vehicles were traveling in excess of 100 MPH when the accident occurred. A GoPro camera found in one of the two vehicles recorded the entire incident. In the recording, the drivers of both racing vehicles and a third man who’d been following them can be heard falsifying a story to be told to police where they would put blame on the Jeep’s driver.

One of the racers suffered cuts and broken bones. When contacted by police, he became uncooperative and has since become difficult to contact since his release from the hospital. The other driver was arrested in early February and charged with two counts of racing on a highway and causing serious bodily injury, both of which are second-degree felonies. If convicted, he faces between two and 20 years in prison.
